Ray Russell and Robotic Tractors
Thank you Ray Russell for responding to our request to learn more about robotic tractors and automated farming. He is a 1981 graduate of Penn State University, with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. After graduation, he spent 20 years in the aerospace industry (General Dynamics, Saab Aircraft, The Boeing Company and Lockheed-Martin). In recent years, he’s turned his engineering and design talents towards the mobile robotics industry. Prior to forming RoPro Design in 2003, he had worked as a consultant in the robotics field for the Carnegie Science Center, Probotics and the NREC. For the past 18 years, he’s owned and operated RoPro Design, a small energetic company specializing in the design and fabrication of prototypes for the mobile robotics market. From 2014-2016, he took a hiatus from his company to work on an agricultural robotics project at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. In 2017, that team came to Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center in Pittsburgh, PA to continue their work in Agricultural Robotics. In 2019, he went part time at NREC in order to join Locomation, a start-up group working in the autonomous trucking space.
